The vampire Dracula was brought to life by Bram Stoker in the novel Dracula in 1897. Stoker originally meant to call his book The Undead. The antagonist would be called Count Vampire. After doing some research however, Stoker found a more appropriate title: Count Dracula. Dracul in Latin means Devil. When the novel was published, it was a moderate success. Dracula was shared under the Gothic horror and compared to novels like Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights. Since the first film based on Dracula was made in 1922, the Count gained an ever increasing popularity.

In the U.S. the novel Dracula was public domain since the day it was published because Stoker forgot to claim the copyrights. Since its publication, Dracula has served as an inspiration to many filmmakers, playwrights and authors. Count Dracula will always remain mysterious, causing people from all corners of the world to go and search for his castle in the woods of Transylvania.
